If you travel without any great expectations, you will usually experience the best vacations. At some point in June, Peter and I planned a trip to the Scottish Islands. The exchange rate of the otherwise sensitive Stirling was just acceptable and we started the planning. Here are the top highlights of our trip through Scotland.
Edinburgh

With Lufthansa, we went directly to Edinburgh we spent our first two days in the Scottish city. The Hop-On and Hop-Off Bus have already a tradition on our journeys, and so we took this bus again and could get a first overview of Edingburgh and its places.
Here you can read our tips about Edingburgh ( english version is following soon):

Driving a car in Scotland

Because we had to get to our chartered boat the next day on the Caledonian Channel, we rented a car. With a hilarious Peugeot 208 with gear shift, we went on the „wrong side“ through the Highlands and had our first stay in a castle hotel.
By boat along the Caledonian Channel

Two days later we reached our ship via Inverness and Loch Ness and checked in.
Here you find a good read about our adventure on the Caledonian Channel.
If you rent a car as well as we did, you can do some nice road trips to the countryside and discover their highlights you otherwise would not have seen.

Scottish Food – Haggis, porridge, and co.
Cooking on the boat might be fun from time to time, but we decided to go out for lunch and dinner. he cultural experience is not only the landscape and the people. You should simply at least once taste the local specialties.
We have waived special recommendations here. It would be unfair to say that one is better than another. We really do not have the experience. But when we liked a restaurant, we collected it for you.

The test of courage was the haggis. Peter had his first haggis in Edinburgh. Now arrived in Fort Augustus, I wanted to follow. What is Haggis and how do you prepare it?

The Monster of Loch Ness and Other Ghost Stories
Not just the Irish that can boast really scary stories. The Scots also have their own special scary stories. When we visited Inverness, we visited the Tower of Stories. Here we found out that „Nessy“ is one of the nicest monsters of all. Dragons, ghosts, enchanted stones, witches and all sorts of other scares can be experienced there.

Accommodations in Scotland
It doesn’t matter how you want to stay. Exclusively at Golf Resorts or Castle Hotels, or if you prefer to spend the night in innumerable B & Bs. You can also spend the night in an eco hut in the National Park. You can rent a motorhome and stay at one of the beautiful campsites. In Scotland, you have a choice. It just depends on your budget. The people here are very friendly and helpful, they love dogs and children. Scotland is somehow like Austria’s Carinthia. Pure hospitality.
